Events in Iraq and Afghanistan during the summer and autumn of 2006 would turn this situation around. The rosy scenario for Iraq and Afghanistan disappeared as British troops in Basra and Helmand province found themselves almost under siege in their bases. The public mood shifted under a spate of media reports that British troops lacked the equipment needed to fight and win. In September 2006, an RAF Nimrod MR2 crashed in Afghanistan and immediately the aircraft, which provided a great deal of the UK full motion video surveillance capability, was grounded for prolonged periods as safety problems were rectified.
